Top Jiu-Jitsu Submissions | Brazil 021 Chicago

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), submissions are what finish a match. They give Jiu-Jitsu its identity—control over brute force. At Brazil 021 Chicago, students learn how to apply the most effective submissions with precision, technique, and safety.

Whether your goal is self-defence, competition, or fitness, mastering submissions is a key part of your journey.

Why Submissions Matter in Jiu-Jitsu

Submissions allow you to end a fight without strikes. They rely on leverage and timing, not size or strength.

They teach you to:

  • Stay calm under pressure

  • Control an opponent without hurting them

  • Defend yourself using technique

  • Develop focus and body awareness

At Brazil 021 Chicago, our approach is structured. We show students how to submit safely, respectfully, and with control.

When Should You Start Learning Submissions?

Right from the start. Many think submissions come later in training, but they’re essential from day one. Even beginners can apply them with the right guidance.

In our classes, you’ll learn:

  • Entries and positioning before attacking

  • How to tap and train safely

  • How to use submissions without force

  • How to escape if you’re being submitted

Learning to submit—and to defend—is part of becoming a complete martial artist.

Who Can Learn to Submit Effectively?

Everyone. No matter your age, build, or background, you can become skilled at submissions.

Submissions are ideal for:

  • Beginners learning control and body mechanics

  • Smaller students who rely on leverage

  • Competitors looking to finish matches

  • Adults seeking real self-defence skills

At Brazil 021 Chicago, we tailor instruction to your level and experience. You’ll build confidence every step of the way.

The Most Common Jiu-Jitsu Submissions

Here are the top submissions taught at Brazil 021—and why they work.

1. Rear Naked Choke

One of the most effective chokes in Jiu-Jitsu. Applied from the back, it restricts blood flow safely and quickly.

Why it works:

  • Doesn’t rely on the gi

  • Hard to escape once secured

  • Works in sport and self-defence

It’s a favourite among professionals and beginners alike.

2. Armbar

The armbar attacks the elbow joint. It’s taught from several positions: mount, guard, and back.

Benefits:

  • Easy to understand

  • Effective against stronger opponents

  • Great for developing hip movement and control

Timing and position make the difference—not force.

3. Triangle Choke

Using your legs, you trap the opponent’s neck and one arm. This submission works best from guard.

Why it’s powerful:

  • Great for smaller grapplers

  • Creates constant control

  • High success in competitions

It teaches angles, patience, and technique.

4. Kimura

The kimura locks the shoulder using a figure-four grip. It’s a strong attack and a great control tool.

Why students love it:

  • Leads to sweeps and transitions

  • Available from top or bottom

  • Works well in both gi and no-gi

It’s also useful for breaking posture and setting up other attacks.

5. Guillotine

This choke attacks the neck from the front. It’s fast and effective, especially when your opponent shoots for a takedown.

Strengths:

  • Quick to apply

  • Doesn’t require the gi

  • Useful for MMA and self-defence

It teaches timing and grip control.

6. Bow and Arrow Choke (Gi only)

This is a powerful collar choke from the back. You use the gi lapel and your body rotation to apply pressure.

Why it’s dangerous (in a good way):

  • Hard to escape

  • Quick and technical

  • Often used in competition settings

It’s one of the cleanest finishes in gi Jiu-Jitsu.

7. Americana

Also called the keylock, this submission is simple and effective. It’s applied from the mount or side control.

Perfect for beginners because:

  • Easy to learn

  • Good control from top positions

  • Builds grip and shoulder awareness

It’s often the first submission taught to new students.
