Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for an Active Bucktown
Plenty of Bucktown neighbors already have a routine on The 606 (the Bloomingdale Trail). Jiu-jitsu adds something running cannot: a skill you get better at every week, problem solving under pressure, and training partners who make you laugh between rounds. Brazil 021 is a BJJ gym in Chicago where beginners, competitors and kids train side by side.
Brazil 021 Chicago is a Brazil 021 academy on Chicago Ave, led by co-founders Andre “Negão” Terencio and Hannette Staack. Hannette is a 7x World BJJ Champion and 3x ADCC Champion, and she still coaches beginners with the same care as competitors.
Not sure if you are a Gi person or a No-Gi person? Try both. Plenty of students train each style during the week, and the skills carry over from one to the other.

Getting to Our BJJ Gym From Bucktown
From the Damen or Western Blue Line stops, ride inbound to the Chicago stop, then use the #66 Chicago Ave bus to reach the academy. If you live near the west side of Bucktown, the #49 Western Ave bus runs south on Western to Chicago Ave, and the gym is just west of that corner.
Street parking is available on Chicago Ave and nearby side streets.
BJJ Bucktown Chicago Classes for Adults and Kids
Adults can start in the Gi or No-Gi beginner classes. Once you have the basics, All Levels classes on Tuesday and Thursday evenings and dedicated No-Gi classes keep things interesting. Kids train in age-based groups that teach respect, focus and how to stay calm when things get hard.
Parents like that kids classes run on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons and Saturday mornings, which leaves room for school, sports and family time. Kids learn to respect their partners, follow instructions and stay calm when a position gets uncomfortable.
- No-Gi Beginners: Friday 6:30 PM
- All Levels (Gi): Tuesday & Thursday 6:30 PM
- Kids ages 3–6 and 7–12: Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday
- Private lessons with a black belt, by appointment

A Safe Place to Learn
Every class starts with a structured warm-up and technique taught step by step. Sparring is controlled, and coaches pair new students thoughtfully. The goal is learning, not proving a point.
